When Artists meet Scientists: The Imaginerium of Technology | Barmak Heshmat

This is a good post to fill those brain cells and soul dreams with hope for the future. A wonderful TEDx lecture by Dr. Barmak Heshmat.  Our hero, Barmak, takes a hard look at what science and art can do when they “do the nasty.” Not literally of course, but figuratively, the two merge like lovers and the outcome is some wonderful and spectacular children.

Engineering and design have always been enabled by technical drawings and visual thinking. This might be most evident from idea notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci. Today engineering and scientific research is a different scene with strict grant-based agenda that does not provide any room for such playful creativities. In his own words:

“Only one in ten ideas will actually see the light of day, and only one in a thousand will actually become a successful business. That’s why we are getting help from concept artists to create a space where these remaining ideas can visually exist and evolve” says Barmak Heshmat a research scientist from MIT. In this visually captivating talk, Barmak shows how these ideas can be resurrected on an online platform that matches artists with scientists. He then calls on us to practice this format of engineering communication to resurrect such ideas for a better more creative future.”

This is a lecture that is worth your time. Good to do cardio too or just play in the car while stuck in traffic. Or those stuck in those “no-win” cubicle jobs in corporate America. Put on your headphones, look busy and learn (smile!). Ciao from MILANO411.COM…
